11.1 "It is / It's" weather statements

AhmedIt's so sunny today! Look at the sky!

FatimaYes, it is beautiful! It's very hot too. Let's stay inside.

AhmedGood idea. It's not windy at all today.

FatimaTrue. It is a perfect day for the beach!

  • NOTE: "It's" = "It is". We use the short form in speaking and informal writing.
  • NOTE: "It" is the subject of the sentence. It does NOT refer to a person — it refers to the weather.
  • NOTE: We always use "It is / It's" + a weather adjective. For example: "It's sunny." / "It is hot."

11.2 "It's" + weather adjective

1. Hodan It's very sunny in Mogadishu today." — Hodan is describing her city.

2. Elena It is really cold in Moscow this week." — Elena tells her classmates about the weather.

3. Yasmin It's cloudy and a little rainy in London." — Yasmin sends a message to her friend.

4. Abdi It is so windy outside! Hold your hat!" — Abdi walks out of the university building.

  • NOTE: We can say "It's very sunny" or "It is very sunny." Both are correct.
  • NOTE: Add words like "very", "really", or "so" before the adjective to make it stronger.

11.3 "It is / It's" + weather adjective

  • NOTE: "It" is the subject. It does not refer to a person — it refers to the weather.
  • NOTE: You can use "It is" or the short form "It's". Both are correct.
  • NOTE: To make a negative, add "not": "It's not cold." / "It isn't cold." / "It is not cold."

11.5 Match each person to the correct weather

  • Audio script (teacher): Hodan — "I'm in Mogadishu. It's very hot and sunny today. No clouds at all!" Jack — "I'm in Toronto. It's snowing a lot. It's very snowy and cold." Mia — "I'm in Rome. The sky is grey and it's raining." Yasmin — "I'm in London. The sky is very cloudy, but it's not raining yet." Carlos — "I'm in Mexico City. There's a big storm — thunder and lightning!" Elena — "I'm in Moscow. It's very windy today."

11.6 Make 12 sentences about the weather

  • NOTE: Start at Column 1. Choose one item from each column to build a full sentence. You can use the same place more than once with different weather words.

AhmedWhat's the weather like in Mogadishu today?

FatimaIt's hot and sunny! What about in Hargeisa?

AhmedIt's cool in the morning, but warm in the afternoon.

FatimaReally? It's cloudy here today. I think it will rain.

AhmedWhat's the weather like in your city right now?

FatimaIt's very windy. I don't like it at all!

  • NOTE: "What's the weather like?" = "What is the weather like?" We use the short form "What's" in speaking.
  • NOTE: Always answer with "It's [weather adjective]." For example: "It's sunny." / "It's cold and rainy."

11.8 Stress and vowel sounds in weather adjectives

  • NOTE: "Freezing" has two syllables: FREE-zing . The stress is on FREE .
  • NOTE: Practise saying each word slowly, then at normal speed. Listen to the audio and repeat.

11.9 Write the weather word you hear

  • Audio script (teacher): ① "It's raining. Don't forget your umbrella." ② "It's so cold outside! I need a coat." ③ "The weather is cloudy today. No sunshine." ④ "It's really windy. My papers flew away!" ⑤ "It's snowing in the mountains right now." ⑥ "It's warm this afternoon. Perfect for a walk." ⑦ "It's stormy tonight. Stay inside." ⑧ "It's hot and dry — typical summer weather." ⑨ "It's cool this morning. A good day for tea."

  • NOTE: After Student B answers, swap roles. Student B now asks a new question from the left column.

MaryamWhat season is it in London right now, Abdi?

AbdiIt's autumn. It's cool and the leaves are changing colour.

MaryamReally? In Mogadishu, it is the dry season. It's very hot and dry.

AbdiWhat is your favourite season, Maryam?

MaryamI love spring! It's warm and everything is green. What about you?

AbdiI like winter. In Hargeisa, it's cool and comfortable — not too cold.

  • NOTE: Use "It's + season" to name the season; ask with "What season is it in [place]?" Weather varies by country.

11.12 The four seasons

1. Yasmin It's summer in Mogadishu. It's very hot and dry.

2. Jack It is winter in Toronto. It's very snowy and cold outside.

3. Mia It's spring in Rome now. The weather is warm and beautiful.

4. Hodan It is autumn in London. It's cool and a little rainy today.

  • NOTE: We can combine season and weather: "It's winter and it's very cold." or "It is summer — hot and sunny!"

11.14 Talk about your favourite season (output task)

Student AMy favourite season is summer. It's very hot and sunny. I love the sun!

Student BWhat's the weather like in your city in summer? Is it very hot?

Student AYes, it's really hot. What's your favourite season?

Student AMy favourite season is spring. In my city, it's warm and a little rainy. I like spring because everything is green and beautiful.

Student BWhat's the weather like in spring in your city? Is it hot?

Student ANo, it isn't hot. It's warm and nice. What about you?

  • NOTE: Use all three language points from this unit: "It's [weather adjective]." · "What's the weather like in [place / season]?" · Season names: spring, summer, autumn, winter.
  • Structure: "In [city], it's [weather adjective] in [season / time]." or "In [city], the weather is [weather adjective]." Can you make a sentence about your own city? "In my city, it's ___ in ___."
  • Audio script (teacher): Farah — "I'm in Mogadishu. It's very hot and sunny today — typical weather here!" Noah — "I'm in Sydney. It's autumn here now, so it's warm and cool at night. My favourite season is summer." Sophie — "I'm in Paris. Today it's a little cloudy, but warm — about 18 degrees. It's not snowy in spring — that's only in winter."
  • NOTE: Try to speak for at least two minutes. Use "It's…", "It isn't…", and "What's the weather like?" in your conversation.
