7.1 Describing a place with adjectives

HodanMogadishu is a coastal city. It's very lively , and it's famous for Lido Beach.

YukiTokyo is a very modern city. It's quite busy , but it's also very beautiful .

  • NOTE: The adjective comes AFTER the verb 'to be': "It is beautiful." / "It's a coastal city." The adjective does not change for singular or plural.
  • NOTE: "Quite" makes the adjective softer: "It's quite busy" = busy, but not extremely busy. "Very" makes it stronger: "It's very lively."
  • NOTE: "It's famous for…" + a noun or noun phrase: "It's famous for Lido Beach." / "It's famous for its beautiful beaches."

7.2 Describing places with adjectives

1. AhmedMogadishu is quite busy in the day, but my neighbourhood is very peaceful at night.

2. MiaRome is a very old city — it's famous for its historic buildings and beautiful art.

7.3 Adjectives with "to be" for describing places

  • NOTE: In English, adjectives come AFTER the verb 'to be': "It is beautiful." The adjective does not change for singular or plural nouns.
  • NOTE: "Quite" makes it softer; "very" makes it stronger; "not very" makes it weaker: "It's not very big."
  • NOTE: When an adjective comes before a noun, use 'a' or 'an': "It's a beautiful city." / "It's an old neighbourhood." Use 'an' before a vowel sound.

7.6 Use the chart to describe your city or neighbourhood

  • NOTE: You can use real information about your own city or neighbourhood. If you prefer, describe a city you know well or a city you would like to visit.

7.7 "There is / there are" for city features

  • NOTE: "There's a lot to do" (positive) ↔ "There's not much to do" (negative). These two phrases are very common when describing a place. Learn them together.
  • NOTE: Use "some" in affirmative sentences; use "any" in questions and negatives: "Are there any good restaurants?" / "There aren't any cinemas."
  • NOTE: This grammar was introduced in Unit 3 (section 3.3) for describing homes and rooms. Look back if you need to review.

7.8 Stress in place names and city words

  • NOTE: Mogadishu: stress the second syllable — mo-GA-di-shu. Many students stress the first syllable by mistake. Copy the rhythm by clapping or tapping on the stressed syllable.
  • NOTE: Bakaaraha: stress the second syllable — ba-KAA-ra-ha. The double 'aa' in Somali spelling indicates a long vowel, which is also the stressed syllable in English.

  • NOTE: "The best thing about it is…" + a noun or clause: "The best thing about Mogadishu is the people."
